Already have some sort of power quality devices? Traditional APFC capacitor banks were designed for stable, linear loads of the 1990s. When a VFD ramps up, the capacitor bank reacts with a lag, long enough for voltage to sag, equipment to misfire, or production to stop. Worse, in harmonic-rich environments, capacitor banks resonate and amplify distortion rather than correct it, pushing THD well beyond IEEE 519 limits and breaching utility regulations.

Harmonic distortion originates from non-linear loads and semiconductor devices. Per the IEEE 519-2022 standard, the total harmonic current distortion (THDi) at the point of common coupling should remain below 8%, while individual harmonic orders should be limited to 5%. When THDi exceeds these limits, transformers overheat, cables carry excessive neutral current, circuit breakers trip under normal load, and pf correction capacitors fail prematurely.

ValBrid’s IGBT-based Active Harmonic Filter (AHF) employs a three-level topology to deliver fast response and compact modular design while mitigating a wide harmonic spectrum—from the 3rd up to the 50th order.
